_______________

2012 was my third year in a row shooting Soundwave Festival in multiple cities. For those of you who don’t know, Soundwave Festival is an Australian music festival that attracts thousands of punters every year. It’s a melting pot of characters, scenes and styles brought together by their passion for music.

This year I was shooting for Spin Magazine and covered the festival in Sydney and Adelaide.

Splendour In The Grass 2012

Crowd and Atmosphere

This year I was selected by the Splendour crew to be one of four official photographers, focusing on capturing the crowd and atmosphere of the three day festival. On the first day it poured rain for less than an hour but it was enough to turn the entire grounds into a mud pit for the rest of the weekend. Gumboots were a must have investment. I met lots of interesting and colourful characters, some of which are shown in the gallery below. I wasn't overly excited about the line-up however I did watch and photograph a few great performances including At The Drive In and Azaealia Banks (pics coming soon).

Highlights: The mud, Great atmosphere, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Dirty Three.

Lowlights: The mud, The sun setting at 5:30, Bands playing in tents.

Sydney Art Galleries

Directors & Curators

While I was busy photographing the latest installment of my Newtown Shopkeepers series, I took some time out to photograph the directors, curators and owners of some of Sydney's leading Art Galleries.
The portrait of Wendy Whiteley at the Brett Whiteley Studio above is a semi-finalist in the Moran Contempory Photography Prize this year and will be up on their website soon.

Check out the rest of the portraits in the gallery below.

Newtown Shopkeepers Exhibition

Update: Check out this great review + photos from my exhibition thanks to Strobed.com - http://www.strobed.com.au/2012/06/newtown-shopkeepers-nic-bezzina-chrissie-cotter/

During the last couple of weeks I photographed over a dozen shops including Daniel Mostyn of Dirty Girl Hair, Chris The of Black Star Party and Lucy Godoroja of All Buttons. I’ll be exhibiting the images at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery on the 30th May til 3rd June.

In this series, I aim to capture the independent shops of Newtown.
Against the backdrops of their own shops, a cross section of inhabitants are depicted. Time is fleeting and the community is always changing. These images will preserve the identities of Sydney’s most vibrant suburb for our community in the present moment, and for generations to come.

Although my first Pozible project was not successful in raising its funding goal, I was so relieved and happy when the City of Sydney Archives Department got in touch and helped fund the project in exchange for some images.

I'm planning to release a limited hard-cover book to coincide with Newtown's 150 yr anniversary at the end of the year.
